Dear Writer–
Do you have an idea for a poetry or creative nonfiction book but you’re not sure where or how to begin?
Are you struggling with writing project that’s refusing to cooperate, and you don’t know why?
Would you like to start publishing your work in literary journals but feel overwhelmed and intimidated by the process?
Or maybe you just need someone to meet with regularly, to be in your corner, to bounce ideas off; someone who will hold you to task (kindly!) so you can achieve the goals you set for yourself and your creative life.
Hey, that’s me! I’m really good at that stuff because I’ve been doing it for a very long time with students who are at all different stages of their writing journeys. I meet writers where they are and help them get to where they want to go through experienced, personalized, flexible mentorship.
Mentorship, in fact, is the term we use in low-residency MFA programs to describe the supportive, intensive one-on-one learning experience between a student writer and a writing professional, and includes such things as:
- Manuscript review and feedback
- Recommending reading lists meant for inspiration and the development of craft
- Guidance about how to live a full writing life, including publishing work, attending conferences and residencies
- Plus lots of encouragement and accountability!
What Qualifies Me to Mentor You?
I have:
- 25 years of experience as a university writing professor in undergraduate classrooms as well as both full and low-residency MFA programs
- 13 years of experience directing MFA programs and running writing retreats
- mentored countless students through writing projects in poetry and creative nonfiction
- been the editor-in-chief of a national literary journal for more than a decade and have held a variety of editorial roles for other small press journals as well
- published eight books and hundreds of my own poems and essays in literary journals. I can help demystify the process from both sides of the editorial desk
